Platform of virtual microscopy
The MECOS-VIM ("virtual microscope") program is an information platform, which enters into set of every microscopy complex
MECOS-C2. It creates convenient media of standard automatic and
information functions moving microscopy to computer monitor. Functional program-techniques
work in MECOS-VIM environment, that is
why every of them can use variety of MECOS-C2 equipment complete sets
and MECOS-VIM tools. MECOS-VIM supports the following tools and functions:

Virtual slides are useful for low cost off-line remote access
(telemedicine consultations), for representative specimen archives gathering,
for staff training and more.

Virtual slides
Virtual slide (VS) is a digital copy of natural specimen under
microscope. Motorized system MECOS-C2,
using MECOS-VIM platform.
can produce virtual slides for telemedicine,
quality control, specimen archive, staff teaching and more. VS can
be analyzed by a doctor or by MECOS-C2 functional programs on computer
without microscope using. The quality and volume of VS depends on
resolutions of objective and videocamera, and on square of microscopy
screening. Modern equipment allows to produce VS with quality compatible
with quality of original specimen, or better sometimes.
VS
production is automated, skilled staff not needed. In
comparison with manually fixed set of field of view VS is much more full
and exact model of a specimen. MECOS-VIM can produce VS of 3 types: 2D
VS (2DVS) for thin static specimens; 3D VS (3DVS) for thick static
specimens; Dynamic VS (DyVS) for thick specimens with live moving
objects. VS shooting is making on maximum magnification needed. Specimen
relocation is making in manner the information on boundaries of fields
of view not be lost. 3DVS are produced with saving a set of focus
layers for every field of view. Autofocus is used for 2DVS production,
autofocus and multifocus can be used for 3DVS viewing. 2DVS
and 3DVS are shown on computer monitor as a specimen panorama
closely to panorama in microscope oculars. Autofocus and multifocus
allow to view virtual slide faster and more careful then a natural
specimen under oculars. DyVS shooting is making without specimen
relocation with frame per second and during a time needed. DyVS allows
to view dynamic process more careful under varying speed.
The main
problem of VS application is its large volume up to 10 Gb. To decrease
VS volume special navigation tools of MECOS-VIM can be used. At first
step a specimen is viewed on low magnification and a doctor fixes
regions of interest. MECOS-VIM informs a user about future accumulated
volume of VS. When rate of volume is achieved MECOS-VIM automatically
produces VS on work magnification using information of first step.
When VS is
viewing by MECOS-VIM on computer monitor navigation tools for exact and fast
screening may be used. Magnification can be changed
at any point in full diapason. Visual analysis of VS can be supported by
automatic functions of MECOS-C2 analyzing programs.
